A procedure to format a FortiGate hard disk. This procedure downloads and runs a formatting image file from a local TFTP server under console control. You can also use this procedure when there is a need to reformat the hard disk when the system cannot access the hard disk anymore. Using the CLI command |
Components |
- A FortiGate (any model). - A null modem cable (supplied with the FortiGate). - A terminal client, such as a PC. running HyperTerminal (Windows) or minicom (Linux). - A cross-over network cable. - A PC running a TFTP server. - A FortiGate hard disk formatting image file for FortiOS, located in the TFTP server’s directory. |
Before You Start |
If it is processed to do not resolve an outage, plan this firmware installation because there will be an outage from when the FortiGate will reboot until it restarts with the new firmware.
Configure the terminal client communication parameters to the following: - 8 bits. - No parity. - 1 stop bit. - 9600 baud (For a FortiGate-300, use 115,000 baud.) |

Some console prompts in this procedure include a default value in square brackets, e.g., [image.out]. To use this default value, just press Enter. |
Steps or Commands |
To format the hard disk:
1) Connect the terminal to the FortiGate using the null modem cable.
2) Connect the PC running the TFTP server to the FortiGate. On models 800 and below connect to the Internal interface, except model 500A on which it is connected to the LAN interface. On models 1000 and higher, connect to port 1.
3) Turn the power off and then on at the FortiGate.
4) When the console displays:

6) Type the IP address of the computer running the TFTP server and press Enter. The console displays:
7) Type an unused IP address that is on the same subnet as the TFTP server and press Enter. The console displays:
8) Type the hard disk formatting image filename and press Enter. The console periodically displays a '#' to show download progress. When the download is complete, it displays a message similar
9) Press R. The console should display messages like this:
10) If Otherwise go to step 11.
11) Reboot the FortiGate. |
