Description How to connect a Nintendo Wii to the Internet
Components
  • All FortiWiFi models
  • FortiOS v3.0 MR6
Steps or Commands

Like other network devices, you can connect a Nintendo Wii to the Internet through a FortiWiFi unit.

You can use the"Search for an Access Point" feature on your Wii to automatically attempt to locate and join the wireless network of your FortiWiFi unit.

If this does not work, you may need to manually configure your Wii and the FortiWiFi unit, especially if you have configured your FortiWiFi unit with:

  • media access control (MAC) address filtering
  • a hidden service set identifier (SSID), so that the wireless network name is not broadcasted
  • a wireless network password, such as a WPA2
  • firewall policies that deny traffic from the Wii to the Internet
  • a network that requires that you manually configure your Wii with a static IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS information, instead of using DHCP to automatically provide them
or other security features that prevent devices from connecting automatically. When manually configuring your Wii and FortiWiFi unit, you must configure them with matching settings for the wireless network, such as the SSID and wireless network password. You may also need to add the Wii's MAC address to the FortiWiFi unit's MAC address filtering list, and configure a firewall policy on the FortiWiFi unit to allow traffic from the Wii's IP address to the Internet.
