This article explains how to work around eDir intermittent authentication issues with FortiOS.

FortiOS v4.0 and above.
Solution
eDir customers may experience intermittent firewall authentication issues with the FortiGate. If this occurs check the following:
1. Verify the Novell LDAP user attribute 'NetworkAddress' whilst the problem occurs. If this attribute is missing then FortiOS firewall authentication will fail. The key word to look for is 'MISSING'.
2. A possible workaround would be enabling the guest account.
3. This issue is a known issue with Novell bug (517585) and resolved in version 8.8.6 SP4. Upgrade Novell eDIR to this version once available for GA.
