Description
This article concerns the removal of FortiGate-5001A and FortiGate-5001B blades from a chassis.

FortiGate-5001B blades should go into “Hot Swap” mode (indicated by a flashing blue LED) when the ejection handles are slightly opened.  Once the blue LED remains solid the blade can be physically removed from the chassis.

The switch is a mechanical device and there are liable to be slight variations in the sensitivity of this mechanism from one unit to another.

In some units it has been noticed that the blade does not go into hot swap mode even when the usual resistance point in the handle opening procedure has been reached.

Scope

FortiGate-5001A, FortiGate-5001B

Solution
An execute shutdown must always be completed before attempting to physically remove a blade from a chassis.

It is recommended to unscrew the top and bottom faceplate screws that keep the blade securely attached to the chassis before opening the handles.

In the case of the FortiGate-5001A blade it should be noted that these are shipped from Fortinet with the internal handle switch disabled and in this initial state there will be no flashing blue LED when the handle is opened. If required, the FortiGate-5001A FortiOS has a CLI command which may be used to enable the switch.
