Description

This article explains how to make a recording in the format that is required by the FortiVoice phone system.

These recordings can be used for Auto Attendant or VoiceMail greetings. This method can also be used to record audio that can be played on a computer, or if it is to be loaded into Music On Hold into the FortiVoice.

Solution

The pre-requisites are a free, robust audio program called Audacity which can be downloaded from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ and a microphone.

Once this program has been installed, and the microphone connected, then the greeting can be recorded.

Audacity cannot natively record in the format that FortiVoice requires, therefore some adjustments need to be made in the software as described in the following steps:

1. Select Edit and then Preferences to reach the Audacity Preferences window.

2. On the Devices tab, change the Channels drop down menu to Mono.

3. On the Quality tab, change the Default Sample Rate to 8000 Hz (this is the 8khz part of the required format). Change the Default Sample Format to 16 bit.

4. Select OK.

Press the Record button when ready to start recording the greeting. When finished recording, press Stop.

The completed recording can now be saved in a format to work with the FortiVoice.

1. Select File and choose Export.

2. Next to Save As Type, choose Other compressed files.

3. Select Options.

4. Change the Encoding drop-down to U-law. Select OK.

5. Choose the directory in which to save the recording and then select Save.

The recording is now in a format that can be loaded into the FortiVoice.
