FortiDirector has available Hostnames (Rule Sets) which can be used by any account to test out the system, play with new Rules and Network Resources, all without having to change your own DNS. These hostnames are free and you can use as many as you need to test and prepare for your own production uses.
The format for these hostnames are:
[usertext].<shortname>.<http|dns>.[alt-]r1cd.com
Broken into components:
[usertext] - This is anything you want to type. You can use "testing" or "mytest" or "sample" or anything that might help you remember why you setup the prototype hostname
<shortname> - This is your company's "shortname". You can find your company's shortname by looking in the upper right corner of the Dashboard, or by clicking on the "Company Profile" page.
<http|dns> - Must be one of http or dns, depending on if you are creating a HTTP Rule Set or a DNS Rule Set
[alt-] - Only applicable to companies that are utilizing the FortiDirector alternate network.
Example
If my sample company's name was "Sample Company" then its shortname might be "sampleco" . If I were creating a DNS Rule Set, I could use the following:
example.sampleco.dns.r1cd.com
I could also roll more, in order to test other scenerios:
roundrobin.sampleco.dns.r1cd.com
failover.sampleco.dns.r1cd.com
transforms.sampleco.http.r1cd.com
