AP wireless interface information not getting updated after AP swap

Scope

KB ARTICLE TYPE: Troubleshooting

RELATED PRODUCTS: ALL AP's

RELATED SOFTWARE VERSIONS: N/A

KEYWORDS: AP, syntax, MAC address

Solution
Replacing one AP model with another usually preserves the settings of the original configuration. A newer AP may have settings that the older one does not; those settings will be set to the default. Despite the fact that some AP settings and configurations can be carried over when replacing an AP, users cannot simply replace an AP300/AP400 with a different model (such as an AP1000). The two models have very different capabilities and configuration specifications and should not be considered synonymous.

For example When an AP320 is replaced for an AP208/AP201 with the “swap ap” command; in the GUI under the AP configuration tab it shows as AP320 but under Wireless Interface tab it shows as AP208/AP201 with the AP208/AP201’s wireless information. But when the AP208/AP201 is replaced for an AP320, it shows the information correctly both on CLI as well as in the GUI.

STEPS TAKEN FOR TROUBLESHOOTING:

1. The limitation with the AP swap is that, the AP swap syntax cannot be used for swapping different AP hardware types.

2. In order to make the AP wireless information to display the correct information, make the APs that were swapped with the AP208/AP201s as Offline APs.

3. Delete the offline AP entries from the AP table.

4. Add the APs manually with the same AP IDs in the controller by from the GUI.
Go to “Configuration” tab >> click on “APs” under “Devices” >> Click on “Add” >> Give the same AP ID of the AP entry that you deleted. Give the AP Name, the AP’s MAC address and the other parameters and apply the settings. Connect the AP to the network.

5. The AP will come online updating the correct information.

RESOLUTION: In order to make the APs come online with the correct information, make the APs that were swapped with the AP208/AP201s as Offline AP. Delete the AP entries from the AP table and then add the APs manually with the same AP IDs in the controller.

ROOT CAUSE: The limitation with the AP swap is that, the ap swap syntax cannot be used for swapping different AP Hardware types.
