Description

How to build WDS (Wireless Distribution System) using Wireless Mesh feature?

Scope

KB ARTICLE TYPE: Configuration

RELATED PRODUCTS: Controller, AP (AP 150 for parent AP and Wireless AP, AP 208 for wireless AP)

RELATED SOFTWARE VERSIONS: 3.5 and above

KEYWORDS: Controller, WDS MAC, MESH

Solution

CONFIGURATION STEPS:

1. Configure AP 150 as gateway AP and save it. Please note that AP will reboot after this change.
2. After the reboot, use “show ap-topology” command to see the MAC address of gateway AP. If it’s online at least once you will not see the WDS MAC.
3. Use this WDS MAC for the 5GHz channel to be the Parent MAC address on the next hop of wireless AP.
4. As long as the wireless AP is configured on the correct channel and have the correct Parent MAC, it should connect come online then you can use the “show ap-topology” command again to get that WDS MAC for the next hop.

And/or you can use this formula to pre-builds as well.

TIPS:To build a MESH network where you are not able to get everything online on the controller first, you can build it by starting from the root and using the backhaul MAC to point to every successive parent AP.
