Description
This article explains the different models for the registration of controller hardware, access points, AP licenses and FortiCare Service contracts.

All product, license and contract registration can be performed via the Fortinet Customer Service & Support Web Portal.

Solution
Access points used with the legacy Meru controllers
7.x Firmware

If access points are being used with legacy Meru controllers (MC15x0, MC3200, MC4200, MC6000) then it is necessary to register the following assets:

  • Legacy Meru controller
  • AP Software Upgrade Licenses
  • FortiCare Service contract covering the controller
  • FortiCare Service contract covering the AP Software Upgrade License
The access points should not be registered.

When registering assets, the Legacy Meru controller must be registered before the AP Software Upgrade Licenses.  The FortiCare Service contracts can only be registered after the registration of the corresponding controller or AP Software Upgrade License.

8.x Firmware

For a legacy Meru controller running 8.x firmware the registration and contracts model follows that of the FortiWLC.  The controllers and physical access points must be registered.

Access points used with FortiWLC controllers
If access points (AP122, AAP400, P822, AP832, AP1000I, AP1000E) are being used with Fortinet FortiWLC controllers then it is necessary to register the following assets:
  • FortiWLC controller
  • Access point hardware
  • FortiCare Service contract covering the controller
  • FortiCare Service contracts covering each access point
There are no AP Software Upgrade Licenses to be registered.

When registering assets the
FortiCare Service contracts can only be registered after the registration of the corresponding controller or access point.

If there are a large number of access points to be registered this can be done by creating a Customer Service ticket and giving the list of access point serial numbers which are to be registered.  Similarly for the registration of a large number of contracts by giving a list of the contract numbers with the serial number of the device to which they are to be registered.

The registration option on the Services and Support Web Portal should allow registration of the access point by using the 16 character Fortinet serial number (for example: PM82EV1526xxxxxx).  If the device is not labelled with a Fortinet serial number then use the number with the format 2615B822exxxxxx.

If there are any issues in registering the AP devices then create a Customer Service ticket through the support portal and provide the serial number(s) of the AP(s) to be registered.

The following diagrams illustrate the two models and show the assets which need to be registered.
