Description
iOS Devices Incorrectly Assigned to Policies Based on OS

Solution
Issue:  The Operating System column in Host View for some iOS mobile devices show Windows for the operating system.  This can cause incorrect assignment of policies that match based on Operating System.

Solution: Addressed in Network Sentry 8.0.4

Note:  Host records already exhibiting this symptom may not immediately reflect the correct OS after the upgrade.

The OS listed in Host View is updated under the following conditions:
  • DHCP fingerprint information is received for that host.
  • Host is registered.
  • Manually modified.

In order for Network Sentry to use fingerprint information, DHCP traffic must be pointed to the eth0 interface of the Application Server (eth0 listens but does not reply to DHCP requests).  The host record for a registered host with an incorrect OS would get updated the first time the host came back online after the upgrade.

If DHCP traffic cannot be pointed to the eth0 ip address (using ip helper on the router), the Operating System can be changed by one of two methods:
  • Right click on the host record and selecting either Modify Host or Host Properties.
  • Re-register the host.
