Description
This article provides information regarding Virtual Machine (VM) migration methods and options available for customers.

Different platforms (example VMware to HyperV).
These types of migrations are not supported by Fortinet.  For assistance, contact VM vendor.

Considerations.
  • Migrations should be performed between VMs of the same appliance model:
    • Control and Application Server appliance -> Control and Application Server appliance
Control Server/Application Server pair -> Control Server/Application Server pair
  • Prior to migration, the original appliance should be updated with all the latest CentOS patches and the software version the new VM will be running.
  • It is recommended to retain the same UUID and eth0 MAC address on the new VM if possible.  Otherwise, processes will not start once the conversion is complete.
  • If the UUID and eth0 MAC address cannot be retained during the conversion, new license keys will need to be downloaded and installed after the conversion.
  • To create new license keys, the FortiCare account must first be updated with the new UUID and MAC address information.  Contact Fortinet Customer Service for assistance.
Professional Services.
If a migration is not possible, customers can contact Sales to schedule Professional Services to build the new appliance and perform the VM transition.
