Description

This article describes Samsung phones running newer Android versions do not automatically launch the Captive Portal.

Scope

Samsung phones with newer Android versions.

Solution

When Captive Network Assistant (CNA) is configured, isolated Samsung phones running newer Android versions do not automatically launch the Captive Portal.

Versions reported with the issue are 10 and 11 (and possibly 9).

Samsung phones with older Android versions operate as expected.

Non-Samsung phones running newer versions operate as expected.

In newer Android code, Samsung devices will only attempt to detect a captive portal if the DNS response contains a public network address.  This requirement cannot be fulfilled due to how the appliance's CNA functionality works.  Consequently, newer Samsung phones will not automatically launch the browser when isolated.

For instructions to enable the Captive Network Assistant function, see Enabling Captive Network Assistant in the Document Library.

Workaround:  Manually open the browser to access the Captive Portal.
Note:  Adding gstatic.com,  to the allowed domains might help in resolving the issue on the portal launching for newer Android versions 11,12.
